World War III is a distant memory. The year is 2023; 20 years after
the horrific war that sent the remaining humans underground to escape
the war-ravaged, nuclear surface of Earth. Civilization is now eking out
an existence in the bunkers built far underground, away from the
radiation of the nuclear fallout on the surface. Albert Tokaj, the
resident psychiatrist, takes the lead role in Afterfall: Insanity’s
bleak and depressing world.
Afterfall: Insanity is the continuation of the story from the
previous Afterfall games where the US, the Soviet Union and Germany
started fighting with each other and World War III began. As with any
series, if you jump into the story half-way through, it can be very
confusing of why things are happening and what the motivation of
characters are. The vast majority of games will try to catch a person up
with past events with a cinematic, a one to five-minute movie about the
past events to bring you up to speed. That practice works for most
games and developers…but not Nicolas Games. They understand that you
don’t need to use a movie to have players understand the universe they
are playing in, you can use conversation. I learned about the entire
history of the universe of Afterfall through talking with characters
that I came across in the story.
Albert Tokaj has a very stressful life; from having to deal with
other people’s issues, to battling his own, he gets little to no sleep.
Insomnia can do strange things to people, even make them believe things
and see things that are not even there. Insomnia can completely destroy
the line between being awake and asleep, which Albert experiences first
hand, and adds the real horror to the game.
The main story of the game starts off with Albert being called into a
meeting with the Commander. Quickly you learn of the issues that Albert
has with authority and the issues the authorities have with Albert, but
they need Albert. After a very tense meeting, it is Albert’s job to
investigate a strange occurrence that is happening on the lower levels
of the bunker that he lives in. Citizens in the lower levels have been
acting strange, almost violent. As the person who deals with people’s
mental problems, it is Albert’s job to investigate the problem and
figure out what is wrong.
Basically from this point on in the game…get ready. Afterfall:
Insanity is one of the creepiest and scariest games of the year. The
very smart and wonderful thing though that Insanity does differently
than most horror games, is that it doesn’t always use a villain as the
thing that will scare you. The music plays a huge role in the feel and
emotion of the game. There were countless times I was freaking out,
hands shaking, sweat pouring down my forehead when all that was
happening was scary music playing. The music alone brought my
scare-level up to a seven or eight, then once I would be confronted with
an enemy, that scare-level would quickly raise to ten or above.
The script for the Afterfall: Insanity seems like it was meant for a
movie; the story is great. Character development for Albert and the
supporting cast is great and through their interactions with each other
you grow to care about Albert early on. You feel for this man as he is
traumatized throughout the game with what he witnesses. The voice acting
compliments the excellent script in almost every instance; every so
often there will be a forced line or when the voice of the actor doesn’t
seem to fit, but those times are few and far between, doing little to
actually remove you from the experience.
As a computer-gaming newbie, besides Solitaire and Roller Coaster
Tycoon, I have never played a hardcore game such as Afterfall: Insanity
on the computer. I wasn’t really quite sure what you expect as far as
controls, and quite frankly I was a little nervous. Luckily, the
controls of the game very simple and easy to pick up, yet still offer
the depth needed for a great playing game. Movement of your character is
mapped to the W, A, S, and D buttons with your field of vision based on
your mouse. A and D will have you strafe back and forth, while S will
have you walk backwards. Hold in W will start Albert walking forward and
to turn you will use your mouse. E is your action button that you will
use to interact with the world around you; pick up a weapon or press a
button. Fighting is regulated to the mouse buttons; left click and you
will attack, right-click and you will block. Controlling in the game is
tight and responsive, which is a must in a survival-horror game.
As hinted at in the last paragraph, Afterfall: Insanity has the
elements of melee combat. The game is not only about melee combat as you
can use a gun, but I found real fun in the melee action and went with
that as much as I could. Sadly there is not a huge variety of weapons to
be had, but what weapons are available are fun to use. For the majority
of the melee weapons, there is no difference in the way Albert handles
them, just the different visual of the weapon in your hand. There are
some differences though; like the sledgehammer – it has to be used with
two hands, and even though it is a lot stronger and can take down an
enemy easier, it is a lot slower to use from the weight of it. As you
finish off your opponent and they drop to the floor in defeat to make
sure they are down, you are able to apply a finishing move to them;
stomping their face in with your boot or smashing their head with your
melee weapon. Each finishing move looks great and feels so much more
amazing. The finishing moves, with their bloody outcome really adds to
the horror feel of the game.
Afterfall: Insanity is rare-gem in gaming. A horror game that not
only scares you physically with things jumping out at you or daunting
enemies running at you, but also the atmosphere and sounds are just as
big in creating this truly terrifying experience. The story is written
with such expertise that you will find yourself lost in the word that
Nicolas Games has created, even though you will be scared the entire
time. If you are a PC gamer and enjoy titles that make you jump, then
you need to look no further than Afterfall: Insanity. Through and
through, this game is a blast and will make you scream like a little
girl.
