Orcs Must Die - PC Game - Download MF, MU
What I'm talking about: Orcs Must Die, a downloadable, single-player, third-person action-strategy game with tower-defense elements PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Where I saw it: At the Robot Entertainment booth at PAX East in Boston.
What I knew going in: I'd prepped myself for the demo by checking out the game's website and watching a few gameplay videos. I've played a ton of tower-defense games, but they're all of the usual “top-down” variety.

What you need to know:
You take the role of a Warmage tasked with defending a series of fortresses and their magic Rifts from waves of marauding Orcs and other creatures.
Each level has one or more doors that open on a path between the beginning of the level and a Rift gate; its health is measured in Rift points.
As enemies walk or fly through the gate, you lose Rift points. Any time you die, you respawn at a cost of losing additional Rift points. If the number of Rift points reaches zero, the game ends.
A crossbow is the default weapon, with a preset, variable number of additional slots on each level for other weapons, spells, or traps. Most weapons and spells have primary and secondary modes.
The setup screen before each level identifies the enemies you'll encounter and which traps are most effective against them.
You begin each level with a set number of points to spend on trap purchases and placements. The level only begins when the player is set.
You earn additional points by killing Orcs and their brethren. Inventive use of traps, combos, and skill-shooting increases the point rewards. You then spend points on the fly to purchase and lay new traps.
Each level consists of six waves. At the end of the third wave, you receive a “Go break” to catch your breath and lay new traps. You then start the level again and face the remaining three waves.

Point in development cycle: Prealpha. Robot is seven months into their development cycle and described the game as "not code complete." The release date is roughly this summer but hasn't been set yet.
My take: Robot Entertainment has decided to work in nine-to-12 month development cycles, with a focus on producing quality titles. For a game that's only seven months into development, Orcs Must Die looks incredibly polished. The animations and gameplay are extremely smooth, and as an experienced tower-defense player, it only took me one wave out of six to immediately come to grips with the on-the-fly purchase and placement system for traps and setting up combos. Games show how viable the downloadable market has become for the production of high-value titles. Unless something goes catastrophically wrong between now and the game's release, I'll certainly pick up the game for myself. Orcs Must Die might be the title that most impressed me at PAX East.
